Why you'll like it:

This Oregano hydrosol, or hydrolat or floral water, is a secondary product of the hydro-distillation of the oregano plant (Origanum Vulgare flowers and leaves). It consists of distillation water in which very small amounts of essential oil remain dispersed, with its components, carvacrol, and thymol. It is 100% natural, pure, undiluted, and free from any preservatives, alcohol, and emulsifiers. This means it is very gentle and can be used spraying straight on the face without causing any irritations.

Fun fact: It does make you smell like a delicious Greek salad but only for about 5 minutes or so! Oregano hydrosol has been historically used in traditional medicine in Mediterranean countries, and up until now is used both in the beauty and also in the food industry in refreshing drinks as a flavoring. Hydrosols have been noticed for their antimicrobial activity, against bacteria and fungi.

Why we recommend this as a toner for atopic skin:

Because it has antimicrobial and antifungal properties but it is also super-mild and kind to your skin!

Malassezia spp. is a genus of lipophilic yeasts and comprises the most common fungi on healthy human skin. But is also attributed with a pathogenic role in Atopic Dermatitis (AD). In fact, the role of the Malassezia yeasts in AD, especially when located on the head and neck region, is now documented in several papers.

According to research, this yeast may interact with the skin's immune system, which is facilitated by the impaired barrier function of atopic skin, and sensitization against Malassezia spp. correlates with the activity of AD. The results delivered that antifungal therapy showed beneficial effects in some patients.

Another research studied the antifungal activities of the essential oils of Oregano and thyme with their main component, carvacrol, on isolates of Malassezia furfur. The antifungal activity obtained showed them, as potential antimicrobial agents against M. furfur, yeast associated with many fungal infections.

It is important to remember that fungi are not the causative agents of AD. It is also important to remember that a possible allergic or nonimmunogenic role of fungi is just an aggravating factor in AD and that traditional treatment with emollients and anti-inflammatory agents is still necessary.

How to use

As a face toner: Spray 2-3 times all over your face before and after applying your moisturizer. Its antiseptic action makes it ideal for acne-prone skin but also for eczema-prone / atopic skin or skin with psoriasis, for that little extra care, you might need.

For smelly feet: Use it as a freshener for feet, shoes, or gym bags, by spraying 1-3 times straight on. Use it preferably on clean toes in the morning before wearing socks or shoes, and in the night, on clean feet once more, before sleep. As a foot soak, add vinegar (apple cider or wine) and water in a basin (or foot spa) and spray 5-10 times the Oregano water in the mix. Soak for 10-30 minutes and dry your feet thoroughly when you're done.

As an air freshener: Another way to use it is as a linen spray and air freshener if you love the Mediterranean scent of oregano. Spray straight on the curtains and furniture fabrics, around the room, or mix it with the water in your humidifier.
